Greed Is the Real Problem—Not Capitalism or Socialism

There’s a quote I keep coming back to that encapsulates the dysfunction we see in today’s economic debates:

“The problem with capitalism is greedy rich people. The problem with socialism is greedy poor people.”

It cuts to the heart of why so many well-meaning economic ideas—on both sides—fail in practice. At its core, the challenge isn’t wealth or poverty. It’s mindset. Specifically: greed and selfishness, no matter which class it hides behind.

Capitalism’s Flaw Isn’t Wealth—It’s How Wealth Is Used

Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system in human history. That’s not political spin—it’s historical fact. But it's also true that many wealthy individuals use the system to maximize personal gain at the expense of others, often hiding behind the shield of “job creation.”

Let’s be honest:
Most business owners don’t hire people out of nobility.
They hire because they need labor to expand profits. And that’s fine—until profit becomes more important than people.

The obsession with shareholder returns, quarterly earnings, and ever-increasing margins has created a system where:

  • Jobs are outsourced to cheaper labor.
  • Employees are overworked and underpaid.
  • Benefits are minimized to “stay competitive.”

This isn't capitalism’s fault—it’s greed using capitalism as a tool.
